An Antique Carpet, Woven Today
This is the philosophy of our project, dedicated to the revival and restoration of the ancient technologies of Turkmen carpet weaving.
The original intent was to recreate and reveal the Turkmen carpet as it might have been seen by the soldiers of Alexander the Great advancing into the heart of Central Asia; by Renaissance artists whose visual language was shaped by encounters with the East; and by the courts and caravan cities that once flourished along the Silk Road. To achieve this, specialists from multiple disciplines were involved — technologists, historians, chemists, and art historians. Step by step, the process through which Turkmen master weavers created their works was reconstructed. Through a rigorous research-based approach, the complete technological cycle was revived — from the preparation of sheep prior to shearing to the final trimming of the finished carpet. Across millennia, this woven form has remained a symbol of refined luxury and a subject of enduring fascination and debate among collectors.
